Latin: Pimenta dioica [Family: Myrtaceae]
Allspice synonyms include Clove Pepper, Jamaica Pepper, Myrtle Pepper, Pimenta, Pimenta dioica, Pimento.Botanical / Habitat
A tropical evergreen growing to 30ft (9m) with an aromatic bark, glossy leathery leaves, panicles of green-white flowers in spring and summer with a pervading scent followed by dark brown globose berries which are picked when green and mature. The aroma is aromatic and clove-like. It grows in tropical America and West Indies in hot dry areas. The genus consists of about 4 species.
Extraction / Production
The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves, also from the fruit. The largest percentage of oil is contained in the shell of the fruit. An oleoresin is also produced from the berries in small quantities. The (leaf) oil produces a brown or yellow red liquid with a balsamic spicy aroma, the (fruit) oil produces a pale yellow liquid with a warm balsamic spicy aroma. Essential oil is distilled in America and Europe from imported berries.
