Latin: Ocimum basilicum [Family: Labiatae / Lamiaceae]
Basil synonyms include Albahaca, American Dittany, Common Basil, European Basil, Exotic Basil, French Basil, Garden Basil, Joy of the Mountain, Ocimum basilicum, Our Herb, Sweet Basil, St Josephs Wort, True Sweet Basil, Tulsi, Witches Herb.
Botanical / Habitat
A tender annual or short-lived biennial growing to 24in (60cm) with square stems, purple flushed foliage and terminal racemes of pink-white flowers which blossom in late summer. It grows in well drained soil in sunny places in tropical Asia. The genus consists of about 150 species.
Extraction / Production
The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering herb and is either colourless or a pale yellow with a light fresh scent. Basil has a top note and is uplifting and refreshing. The French or true basil oil is produced in Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Hungary, Italy and USA.
Basil is used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine and was used by the ancient Greeks.
