Vitamin A
Vitamin A synonyms include Alpha carotene, Beta carotene, Retinol.
Vitamin A is essential for healthy eyes and skin, and building strong bones and teeth and was discovered in 1913. The body converts some carotenes (primarily alpha and beta carotene) in plant form into Vitamin A and any excess is used to fight off free radicals that can cause cancer, heart disease and other problems. Beta carotene is non toxic and easily converted in the liver and small intestine. Vitamin A helps to resist infection and illness by aiding the body's epithelial tissues.
This fat soluble vitamin is stored in the body mostly in fatty tissue and the liver and therefore does not have to be replenished every day. However an excess can cause a build-up in the body with consequent problems. The condition is called hypervitaminosis however it can be avoided by taking beta carotene instead of vitamin A supplements. The best source of Vitamin A includes cod liver oil, dairy products, eggs, kidney and liver; the best source of beta carotene includes apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, spinach and tomatoes.
